Christmas time is a time when you get presents for the ones you love. A story called The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry, is of a young loving couple spending a cheerful Christmas together, but their are many different twist and turns that can ruin or bring joy to this Christmas. Jim is a man who is a respectful person, and he is respectful because no matter what Della does to her look he would always love her. Della is a caring young lady because she would do nything to get Jim the perfect present. The story takes place on Christmas Eve in the city, and around the year 1892. Both Jim and Della want to get each other a perfect gift, but they both don’t have enough money. They solved their money issue by Jim and Della selling their most prized possessions. Even if they had to give up their most valuable belongings there is still a chance that they can have a cheerful Christmas.
In the story The Gift of the Magi there are many words that can describe the tone of the story, but their is only one word that I think describes the tone which is joyful. One example of the story being joyful is when they give each other gifts. Jim had gotten Della some beautiful combs, and she had wanted those combs for a long time. Della had gotten Jim a dull precious metal seemed to flash with a reflection of her wonderful bright spirit. Another example is how they were each able to buy the presents. The thing that Jim had done to get Della The Combs was by selling his grandfather’s watch. Even though Della had saved up money for months and all she had came up with was one dollar and eighty-seven cents. But, that did not stop her from getting Jim a present. She had cut off most of her hair and sold it to get money for Jim’s present. Even though they had sold their most valuable possessions they had gotten a different possession, and together they give each other joy.
Clearly in the story The Gift of the Magi is of both Della and Jim had a wonderful and festive Christmas. The tone of the story is of joy because they each give each other joy. They did that by the both of them giving each other presents they had thought they would not be able to afford. Together they each had a joyful Christmas, got presents they had never thought they would, and got to spend time with the person they love. That is the tone of the story The Gift of the Magi.
